Description:
To All Training Chiefs/Sheriffs/Superintendents/Training Commanders & Coordinators:
Many larger agencies conduct a “Pre-Academy” prior to sending their officers/deputies to the Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy (HRCJTA). This prepares the student for their academy experience. The first week of the HRCJTA basic classes (Jailor/L.E.) is our “Pre-Academy”.
I have noticed that the basic students that are most overwhelmed, at the beginning of the academy, are normally from an agency that does not do any type of “Pre-Academy”. We always attempt to do an exit interview when folks resign or fail early on in the academy.
As an option, the HRCJTA will now offer a “Pre-Academy” for basic students. This Pre-Academy is optional. If you wish to send your folks to this Pre-Academy please register with Tameka, or if a late hire just have them show up (not preferable but workable) and we can accommodate them.
These Pre-Academies are formatted as follows:
9:00-10:00 AM Introduction to the academy experience
10:00-11:00 AM Tour of facility and satellite facilities
11:00-12:00 AM Past class leaders/graduates open discussion
12:00-1:00 PM Lunch
1:00-2:00 PM Family Hour (family receives tour, responds to questions)
2:00-3:00 PM Staff Instructors Introduction and Expectations
3:00 PM End orientation
Dress is casual, agency representatives are welcome to attend with new hires for portions of the day.
Please advise new hires of this schedule so they can invite their family for the 1:00 PM session.
Although this is an optional program, we believe it may greatly assist with preparing students for what can feel like an overwhelming experience early on.
