Listed below are available specialized training classes which will provide in-service credit for the participant. Classes are listed in alphabetical order. Jail Death Investigations

The Hampton Roads Criminal Justice Training Academy will be conducting a “Jail Death Investigations” Training on Monday, August 14, 2017 from 0800-1630. This class will cover:

Recent state legislative developments requiring oversight of jail death investigations

Recent developments in constitutional federal, and state law focusing on court decisions in Virginia and the 4th Federal Circuit

The role of jail administration, internal affairs, local police, the Virginia State Police and the Department of Justice

The new role of the Board of Corrections, your medical provider’s role and “mortality” review

Relevant National Commission on Correctional Health Care standards (“NCCHC”), focusing on NCCHC Mental Health standards

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s role in fatality review

Participants: This training will allow for robust information exchange among participants through class questions and discussions. Target audience includes Lieutenants or above, Internal Affairs’ officers, and jail Health Service Administrators (HSAs). Participants are eligible to receive 4 hours legal and 3.50 hours career development of jail officer in-service credit.

Presenters include: Jeff Rosen, Partner, Pender & Coward Law Firm; Expected presenters will also include Secretary of Public Safety Brian Moran and leaders from the American Jail Association, the Virginia Association of Regional Jails, the Virginia Sheriff’s Association, the Virginia State Police, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Registration: There is no charge for this training. Lunch will be provided for all participants. To register, please follow the Academy’s registration procedures. Contact Mrs. Tameka Guild , the Registrar to enroll.

Leadership Institute (The)

Session I: May 15-18, 2017 0800-1700
Session II: July 24-27, 2017 0800-1700

In-Service: Law Enforcement, Jailor/Custodial and Court Security/Civil Process.

Credit Hours: 34 Career Development, 4 Legal, and 2 Cultural Diversity.

Max Students: 30

This course is intended for the new or emerging leader. Officers recently promoted for the first time will benefit most from the training. Topics of instruction include: self-assessment, situational leadership, employee motivation, problem solving, decision making, organizational behavior, organizational change, conflict resolution, etc. This course is divided into two sessions. The first session is four days (32 hours) and the second session also four days (32 hours). There is an application process for admittance into the program. Also, there will be minimal registration fee. Look for additional information on the program in the early part of 2017.
