Listed below are available instructor certification and re-certification classes. Classes are listed in alphabetical order. Students may be registered by mail, e-mail: tameka.guild@hampton.gov, or FAX: (757) 595-1801 with the academy registrar.
Please fill out our Course Registration Form to register for these classes.

ATTENTION: When registering for any Instructor Re-Cert Class and On-Line Instructor Re-Cert Classes please make sure you have completed your Instructor Instruction Hours Form prior to registering for the class. It must be attached to the registration form and approved by the Executive Director. Once approved the Registrar will confirm class. If you are due in 2018 (8 Hours) teaching hours are needed for each speciality.

Advanced Arrest Control Instructor Class

Cost: FREE

The Virginia State Police Training Group/HRCJTA is putting this class together to allow our local Arrest Control Instructors to expand their current skill sets by learning from senior instructor from the commonwealth. Topic may vary but include vehicle extraction, ground defense and takedowns.

Driver Training Instructor School

Classification : Instructor Training
Where : Suffolk Executive Airport (First Day at HRCJTA)
When : April 16-20, 2018
Description :
Time: 0700-1600 (Will include some night time exercises)

This course is designed to prepare experienced officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct driver training.

Prerequisites:The applicant must have completed a General Instructor Development course or be able to complete the General Instructor Development course in order to be certified as a Driver Training Instructor. To successfully complete this course the student must attain a minimum of 90% on all required courses and a minimum score of 80% on the final written test.

Each student must bring the following:A valid driver’s license. A law enforcement vehicle equipped with emergency lights and siren, in good mechanical condition with four good tires mounted on the vehicle, and a good spare tire. Special attention should be given to the brakes, steering, suspension, seat belts and fuel system to ensure excellent working condition before arriving on the training site. Agencies are responsible for vehicle maintenance. A tire gauge and 50ft. tape measure would also be useful.

Police equipment or supplies that are not needed in the operation of the vehicle or the safety of the officer should be removed from the vehicle and left at the agency. Vehicles must be covered with minimum automobile insurance as required by law and/or insured by the state or municipality.

Wear comfortable clothing for either warm or cool weather. Working conditions will be strenuous and may involve areas where grease, oil and gasoline are prevalent. Rain gear is recommended.

Students must provide a copy of your agency's general order/policy on pursuits, vehicle operations and roadblocks.

Students should bring snacks, drinks and complete lunch in a cooler. There will be no set breaks, but there will be approximately a 45 minute break for lunch.

Field Training Officer

Description :
April 30 - May 3, 2018
October 9-12, 2018

Time: 0700-1545.

This school is designed to provide the experienced criminal justice officer with the knowledge and skills necessary to properly and effectively train and formally evaluate probationary trainees. This certification has a required written test based on DCJS standards.

In-Service: Law Enforcement, Jailor/Custodial and Court Security/Civil Process.

Credit Hours: 30 Career Development, 2 Legal.

Firearms Instructor

Classification : Instructor Training
Where : Hampton Police Division Range
When : September 24 - October 5, 2018
Description :
Time: 0730-1630 except for 2nd Monday is from 0730-2100.

This course is designed to prepare experienced officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct firearms training. September 24th through October 2nd is the Pistol/Shotgun Instructor Program; October 3rd through October 5th is the Carbine Instructor Program. Students may attend the Pistol/Shotgun portion only, or they may attend the entire two week course.

Prerequisites:
Pistol/Shotgun:
  • Participants must have completed a DCJS basic firearms program (handgun) and currently be certified to carry their pistol (yearly qualification).

  • Participants must attend the academy pre-shoot and obtain a minimum score of 90% on the Modified Double Actin qualification course.

  • Participants must demonstrate proficiency with their handgun while qualifying at the pre-shoot.


  • Carbine:
  • Participants must have completed a basic carbine course (rifle) and currently be certified to carry a patrol rifle (yearly qualifications).

  • Participants must attend the academy pre-shoot and obtain a minimum score of 90% on the HRCJTA Patrol rifle qualification course.

  • Participants must demonstrate proficiency with their patrol rifle while qualifying at the pre-shoot.


  • Successful completion requires a minimum score of 80% on the final written test.
    A lesson plan classroom presentation is required.
    Students must score a minimum of 90% on all required courses.

    Firearms Instructor Pre-Shoot

    Prerequisite:
    Students must attend the Academy's pre-shoot. Students must score a minimum score of 90% on the Modified Double Action Course to be eligible to attend the Firearms Instructor (pistol/shotgun) School. Students must score a minimum score of 90% on the HRCJTA Patrol Rifle Course to be eligible to attend the Firearms Instructor (carbine) School.
