Listed below are available instructor certification and re-certification classes. Classes are listed in alphabetical order. Students may be registered by mail, e-mail: tameka.guild@hampton.gov, or FAX: (757) 595-1801 with the academy registrar.
Please fill out our Course Registration Form to register for these classes.

ATTENTION: When registering for any Instructor Re-Cert Class and On-Line Instructor Re-Cert Classes please make sure you have completed your Instructor Instruction Hours Form prior to registering for the class. It must be attached to registration form and approved by the Executive Director. Once approved the Registrar will confirm class. If you are due in 2016 (4 Hours), 2017 (6 Hours), 2018 (8 Hours) teaching hours are needed for each speciality.

Arrest Control/Defensive Tactics instructor School

Credit Hours: 34 Career Development.

Max Students: 25

This course is designed to prepare officers to teach fellow officers the most current techniques of basic arrest control and defensive tactics. This school is physically demanding and participants should be in above average physical condition. Students attending are required to wear appropriate attire for physical activities and bring handcuffs and leather gear on the first day. participants are required to have at least 2 years of experience with a criminal justice agency to attend. General Instructor School is highly recommended prior to attending this program.

Firearms Instructor

When : September 25 - October 6, 2017
Description :
Times: 0730-1630 except for 2nd Monday is from 0730-2100.

In-Service: Law Enforcement, Jailor/Custodial and Court Security/Civil Process.

Credit Hours: 34 Career Development, 2 Legal.

Max Students: 20

This course is designed to prepare experienced officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct firearms training. September 25th through October 3rd is the Pistol/Shotgun Instructor Program; October 4th through October 6th is the Carbine Instructor Program. Students may attend the Pistol/Shotgun portion only, or they may attend the entire two week course.

Prerequisites:

  • Participants must have completed a DCJS basic firearms program (handgun) and currently be certified to carry their pistol (yearly qualification).
  • Participants must attend the academy pre-shoot and obtain a minimum score of 90% on the Modified Double Action qualification course.
  • Participants must demonstrate proficiency with their handgun while qualifying at the pre-shoot.
  • Participants must have completed a basic carbine course (rifle) and currently be certified to carry a patrol rifle (yearly qualification).
  • Participants must attend the academy pre-shoot and obtain a minimum score of 90% on the HRCJTA Patrol rifle qualification course.
  • Participants must demonstrate proficiency with their patrol rifle while qualifying at the pre-shoot.

    Successful completion requires a minimum score of 80% on the final written test (no retests offered).
    A lesson plan classroom presentation is required (no retest offered).
    Students must score a minimum of 90% on all required courses (two retests offered).

    Prerequisite-Students must attend the Academy\'s pre-shoot. Students must score a minimum score of 90% on the Modified Double Action course to be eligible to attend the Firearms Instructor (pistol/shotgun) School. Students must score a minimum score of 90% on the HRCJTA Patrol Rifle Course to be eligible to attend the Firearms Instructor (carbine) School.

    This course is designed to meet the training requirement for the Certification of Criminal Justice instructors as set forth in the DCJS Reference manual. The goal of the program is to prepare the criminal justice trainer with the basic skill necessary to research, design, prepare, present, and evaluate a block of instruction. This class requires a minimum two years experience in a criminal justice agency to attend.

    Due to the limited number of days, the student will be required to complete work outside of class.

    Description :
    All certifications are valid for three years as long as the instructor is in good standing. To maintain certification, instructors must attend the appropriate class for each certification and have provided a minimum 8 hours of instruction every 3 years for each instructor certification. Proof of this instruction must be provided to the Academy\'s registrar prior to registration for the recertification class.
